Detox Face Mask

The skin is the largest organ in the human body and it plays a vital role in detoxification. It eliminates toxins through sweating and it also absorbs nutrients from the air and from topical products.

However, sometimes the skin can become overloaded with toxins through air and water pollution, an unhealthy diet, or if you regularly use skincare products that contain harsh chemicals.

Depending on your toxic load, stress, and diet, your skin will start to let you know it needs some extra love and attention by looking dull, dry, or through acne or redness flareups.

The best way to improve your skin’s health and keep it a healthy organ is to:

  • regularly dry brush or exfoliate,

  • drink 1-2 litres of water per day,

  • avoid harsh and toxic skincare chemicals

  • moisturize daily with tallow, shea butter, or coconut oil - especially when the pores are open after a warm shower

  • eat food that supports detox organs (liver and kidneys) such as garlic, turmeric, cruciferous veggies, green tea, and lemon, and high fiber foods that eliminates toxins (through the digestive system) such as probiotics, eggs, flaxseeds, chia seeds, fruits and vegetables.

  • use detox ingredients like bentonite clay that draws out toxins, inflammation, and other imbalances of the skin

With only three ingredients you can whip up an antibacterial, antifungal, and soothing homemade face mask perfect for acne breakouts and sensitive skin.

Bentonite clay is always in my medicinal cupboard because it can be taken orally or topically to help reduce the effects of toxins in your body. It is known for its ability to absorb various toxins, oils and even bacteria from the skin, and can help ease constipation or digestive upset.

Apple Cider Vinegar is also a staple for my household as it can help with digestion, in salad dressings and marinades, a disinfectant or cleaner (especially for drains), and also an amazing skin tonic that can diminish sun and age spots, improve acne and acne scars, and remove stubborn make-up.

Lavender oil is another “jack of all trades” in my home. It can help with calming the crankiest of kids (and adults), ease burns, moisturizes skin, and is non-comedogenic for pores. Lavender oil is also naturally antibacterial, meaning that it kills acne-causing bacteria that might infiltrate your pores. This makes lavender oil perfect for preventing, calming, and healing painful acne breakouts.

This recipe makes enough for your face and any other area of the body you want to detox - including your underarms (helps balance PH and eliminates red, itchy rashes) or feet (pulls toxins through the soles of your feet)!
